"'The best restaurant I reckon in Hammersmith is The Gate which is in a converted church where they serve up fantastic veggie food at great prices' The Gate Restaurant, hidden behind old brick walls, is a great little place where you can escape city life. There is a beautiful courtyard dotted with climbing plants whilst the restaurant is a basic eatery with a touch of funk. The menu consists of freshly prepared, imaginative vegetarian cuisine."

"'With its clean, sparse decor defiantly in the modern mould, the Gate mark II (the other’s in Hammersmith) is clearly not your run-of-the-mill vegetarian. True, with risottos, soups & pancakes making appearances, many of the expected veggie staples are present, but here they’re invented anew through the judicious choice of ingredients: pancakes are layered with spiced tomato & aubergine curry & served with mango chutney, raita & roasted okra; risotto might be flavoured with pea & mint; soups change daily. Textures are cleverly contrasted, while dishes erupt with vibrant tastes. With a succinct wine list adding to the ‘excellent food & drink’ & staff who are ‘knowledgeable’, many diners leave convinced that this is ‘the best vegetarian restaurant I have been to’."

"Tucked away in a quiet, leafy church courtyard, the Gate's sunflower-yellow walls and stripped-wood floor are a civilised setting in which to enjoy the elaborate, imaginative but not over-ambitious globally inspired menu. Probably London's best vegetarian restaurant."
N/A, Time Out - April 2007 |
"A rarity, in that rather than being a vegetarian restaurant it is a restaurant that is vegetarian: the cooking is of high standard: the dishes are imaginative, rich and well-presented: and almost as an afterthought, they are all vegetarians. You can see why the Hammersmith locals have kept quite about this one. The menu changes monthly but expect well-made pastas dishes, noodles and serious puddings - every thing from creme brulee to bitter chocolate and hazelnut cake. There's also a decent cheese board teamed with a quince compote. And there's a grown up sort of wine list..."

"There were plenty of ordinary starters: a gazpacho, a caesar salad or a spinach roulade, all for a fiver or less...The bean tortilla was as good as any Tex-Mex, the pumpkin smooth, tangy and vaguely reminiscent of a crêpe aux fruits de mer.... ‘It’s just a much nicer environment when you are cooking in a kitchen without meat or fish,’ he says. I am sure that there are many who would prefer to keep The Gate as one of those ‘best-kept-secret’ sort of places..."

"A 'place you can really fall in love with'..."
